Last weekend I went to death Valley for about 14 hours, including about 9 of that spent sleeping. My girlfriend was leaving for Amsterdam on Friday so I decided to head up north for the weekend. I was gonna try to ski Friday but I had left too late to make that possible. Rather than just get to the hostel a night early and chill, I decided I’d go visit death Valley for a few hours and camp out for free. There were only 10 free campsites so I had no idea if I’d get one, but at least the next cheapest were only $20 and there were hundreds of those.

I didn’t really get to see much, just some sand dunes, cool places to take pictures of my car, some surrounding mountains, and a cool short hike at sunset. The most interesting part to me was just how desolate it is there. Sure it’s a desert and it gets really fucking hot there, but it’s a different scale of empty versus anywhere else I’ve been.

I went to bed by about 8pm since I was tired from the week and it was dark/cold. Then I woke up at 0500 and drove straight to mammoth to enjoy a couple days of skiing. I’m sure the views were spectacular on the way to lone pine but I couldn’t tell since it was dark. Only got good as I approached town and could see the Sierras lit up in the sunrise. Mammoth was great though, I always forget how awesome skiing is. Even though the snow was old, there was plenty of it. Windbuff snow was plenty and I still found untracked powder (heavy powder) in the woods.

I got home late on Sunday night as my first night finally sleeping in my new place. It was certainly cold but my space heater fixed things up and I slept comfortably. I enjoyed the 15 minute commute all week and then Thursday hopped on a plane to salt Lake where I’m at now for the rest of the weekend.

And holy crap did I pick the right time to be here! It snowed about a foot on Thursday through the night and is supposed to keep snowing all weekend; totalling over a few feet by the end of it. It was amazing today with all of the fresh snow and I’m dead tired because of it. Will make a nice meal, sleep plenty, and prepare for the storm tomorrow, and even more powder to ski on Sunday. I’d stay longer but I leave on Thursday again, headed to Amsterdam. So I occasionally have to actually work!

More ski trips coming up on as many weekends as I can manage. My ikon pass makes it easy to hop around and enjoy the bountiful winter. Just gotta book lodging at decent advanced rates and flights that way as well. Going to mammoth is easier since I just drive and stay at the same place every time but that hostel is expensive (50-70 a night, for a shared room hostel) and gas is equivalent to flights. Anyways, time to feast and sleep!

Thankfully, no.

I love the land in CA. I’ve camped with my wife and kids all up along the coast a few times, and have family in the Bay area. Not a chance in hell I’d ever live there.
